Help finding suitable CB Therapist in Perth

Post by johnxtc » Fri Apr 16, 2010 1:19 am

I have endured AP for over 25 years now and am very depressed about it. I have withdrawn from life a great deal. (People at work think I am strange, though nobody mentions the fact that I am never seen at the trough! I have become a master at avoidance! ). Somehow I have been quite successful at work and seem to offer value to my empoyers but I avoid going out to any functions etc. It is hampering my progress in the company as i don't push myself to do any courses etc that will put me in uncomfortable situations. I am a very shy person naturally and get embarassed easy, but get on very well with all at work. I take hope from the fact that it is possible to recover on your own as I find the thought of sitting in a room with others discussing this curse as overwhelming.

I feel like I am acting a double life at the moment as with my own direct family there is no problem. (I find it impossible to talk to my wife about it, yet we have been married for over 20 years). I also take my sons to sports events but avoid going to toilets even if I am bursting. I travel occasionally with work but find it impossible to void on a plane, or airport toilets, which raises anxiety levels greatly.
This is the first time I have ever admitted this to anyone so I suppose it is a start.

Does anyone know of a CB Therapist in Perth that I could contact, as I realise that I have to make a start.

Good luck everyone!

You have already made a start, by posting to this forum :-).
I can't help you with finding a suitable Perth therapist, but somebody else reading this forum may be able to.
You say nothing about just how severe your paruresis is (what we call the "Primary Paruresis"), but the fact that you don't feel free to discuss it with anyone you know, shows that your Secondary Paruresis (what's going on in our mind) needs a lot of work also. The fact is that sitting in a room with many other sufferers and disclosing what it has meant to us all, is remarkably freeing. That's why we start off each workshop that way on the Friday night. If you could talk yourself into attending one of our annual workshops, you would probably kick yourself for not doing it sooner!
The Sydney one is probably out of your reach (it's next weekend), but there's likely to be a Melbourne one early in 2011.

And what about the Perth Support Group? For starters, what about emailing David, and arranging for him to have a cup of coffee with you before you actually join the group?

Best wishes, JohnW

Hello John,

We haven't had a Support Group meeting in Perth for a while, but we now have one scheduled for 6-30pm Thursday 1 July at the Burswood casino, in the carbon Bar at a table on the right towards the front as you walk in. Please email me at dxedwards32@hotmail.com for more info. Our meetings are very informal and relaxed, and I recommend you attend.

Regards,

David
